Border Collie Flea and Tick Control Suggestions

Question: About 6 months ago we adopted a 3 year old BC dog from a local Border Collie rescue center. She is healthy, happy and very obedient and we named her Zooby. We live in North Fork, NY and we have small backyard that is not fenced. We take Zooby for 40-45 minutes long walk every morning and evening. Last week we noticed ticks and fleas all over her coat and it looked terrible. At the moment to control fleas and ticks our vet has recommended Interceptor and Comfortis, but that doesn’t seem to work as we still see ticks on her body.

She loves playing in dirt, digging holes and likes jumping in the tall grass, would that be the reason why she get ticks and fleas? Now, the vet has recommended using frontline to control flea, and said we couldn’t bath her.

Revolution flea and tick control medicine is also something we have been reading about, but not sure about it. Anyone has any advice about its use? Any help and suggestion would be appreciated, because I want the best solution for her to keep the ticks and fleas away.

We also had the same problem with our collie every time we used to take him to the beach. Problem with these flea control products is that they work great for few weeks and then goes ineffective. We used to find it easy to control ticks by using Frontline Plus and Advantix, but after some time they failed to protect our collie from ticks.

Last week on our trip to the beach, we put Preventix collar, but it is not as effective as I thought it would be, because I found alive ticks on him 3 days after we left the beach where he might have picked up fleas and ticks.

I’m not sure, but I think tick control collars don’t work anymore, because they have been extremely effective in the past, but these days not as effective. Alternatively I have been using Comfortis successfully for controlling ticks. So far results have been more than satisfactory.

We have 3 Border Collies and during the summer season they are constantly in fresh water. We use Revolution, which has been efficiently working to keep our collies fleas and ticks free.

We live in a farm and for our collies we use frontline, however it works perfectly well to control ticks but somehow it is not that effective for fleas. From last 2-3 months we have been using K9 Advantix which surprisingly doing pretty well to control both fleas and ticks.

I don’t know if you heard about Capstar pills, but we have been using it with great success. It simply kills all ticks and fleas your. It doesn’t last for long, but it’s extremely effective while it last. All I do is open my BC’s mouth and stick it down his throat and then give him some water or milk. You can also give it by hiding or mixing in your dog’s favorite treat. It starts working in just 20-30 minutes as you see ticks and fleas dropping dead off your dog.
